2010

With some late withdrawals, 24 boats eventually fished the 24th Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic, with Anglers from every State in Australia and from Canada, China, Japan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Russia, Sweden, UK and USA, making this event once again the Premier Heavy Tackle Black Marlin Tournament in the World.

Unfortunately, due to heavy flood rains in Far North Queensland, the waters along the Ribbon Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef were unseasonably dirty, resulting in fewer strikes than normal. In addition, strong winds made sea conditions heavy, resulting in a lower than normal tag to hook-up ratio.

The overall stats of the Tournament were 147 strikes, 106 hook-ups for 59 tags. The size range of Black Marlin tagged was: (Statistics)
100 to 300 pounds 31; 300 to 500 pounds 16; 500 to 700 pounds 4; 700 to 900 pounds 3; 900 to 1000 pounds 4 and Andrey Grigoriev, fishing on Moana, tagged a magnificent 1100 pounder.

Champion Male Angler was Tomonori Omi from Japan, fishing on “Top Shot” with 6 tags from Runner-Up Brian Luecke from USA fishing on “Kekoa” with 4 tags on a count back from Richard Pawluk from Canada on “Viking” with 4.

Champion Female Angler was Sue Ahlers from Australai, fishing on “Iona” with 4 tags from Gayle Mosley of Australia fishing on “Ikey Moe” with 1 tag.

Champion Team was Richard Pawluck and James Wild from Canada on “Viking” with 7 tags, in 2nd place Naoto Aoyagi and Tomonori Omi from Japan on “Top Shot” with 6 tags and 3rd place Alex Kaiko and Brian Luecke from USA on “Kekoa” with 5 tags.

Champion boat was “Viking” with Captain Billy Billson with 7 tags from Runner-up “Top Shot” with 6 tags.

The Calcutta Boat Auction Pool was $14,150.00 less 10% for Charity and the successful bidder for “Viking” was Ralph Czabayski who scooped the pool!

Lizard Island Lodge, with new owners Delaware North, put on magnificent Dinners and service and all participants thoroughly enjoyed the Hospitality provided at the Tournament.

Special thanks to our other Sponsors, Rivergate Marina and Shipyard, Cresta Motor Yachts, Mr Peter Teakle and Shimano.

The 25th Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic will be held from 1st to 8th October 2011 and should be a special event for your diary.
